Special Services
All GP practices are contracted to provide "essential services", that is, the basic treatment of ill people. We also provide the following "additional services":
Child Health Programme
For all children aged 0-5 years old. The Child Health Programme is a series of health check visits and immunisations offered to every child in Scotland. Your health visitor can offer you additional reviews if you have any concerns. You may also ask your health visitor to visit or contact the health visitor at any time. Your Health Visitor is Mrs Kerry Ellis and she can be contacted at Newton Stewart Health Centre on (01671) 403068.

Well Woman and Family Planning
The practice offers a range of contraceptive services including prescription of the contraceptive pill, fitting of intra-uterine devices, fitting of Nexplanon and post-coital (emergency) contraception. Women between the ages of 20 and 60 will be invited to attend the clinic every 3 years for a cervical smear. A mobile breast screening service is available for the women over 50 on a 3 yearly basis.
Ante Natal Care
The practice provides shared ante natal care and post natal care with the hospital consultants at Cresswell Maternity Wing in Dumfries. The practice midwife - Mel McLean also holds a weekly clinic at Kirkcowan and Newton Stewart Surgery (by appointment). To contact Mel telephone (01671) 404283.
Dental Problems
Registered Dental Patients - should continue to contact their own practice if they have a dental emergency, either during surgery hours or during out of hours and they will be directed accordingly.

Minor Operations
The practice has a Liquid Nitrogen clinic every fortnight at Newton Stewart surgery on a Friday night for freezing of warts and other small skin lesions. Patients should be reffered by their GP to this clinic. We also carry out a variety of minor operations under local anaesthetic. Initial consultations take place during normal surgery. You will be required to sign a consent form for any minor surgery carried out by the practice.
Refer Yourself to Physiotherapy
You can refer yourself to Physiotherapy by completing a form from the reception in the Helth Centre. Appointments are available between Monday and Friday, 8.30am to 3.30pm.

- You have not been to physiotherapy/other practitioner with the same condition in the last year.
- You are not seeing another physiotherapist/other practitioner like an osteopath at the same time.
- You are over 17.
- You do not need a house call.
- You are not being treated by a consultant for the same condition as he will refer you if it is indicated.
Over 75
If you have not been seen at the surgery for over a year you can request a check up appointment with the practice nurse if you wish.
Travelling Abroad
Appointments may be made with the practice nurse for immunisations and advice on malarial protection. Contact the reception and they will pass the relevant information on to the practice nurse. A fee may be charged for this service.
Private Medical Examinations
Pre-employment, Life Insurance, HGV and other private medical examinations are conducted by special appointment. Fees are payable for these services. Please ask at reception about fees. Please note that a fee may be charged for certain non NHS medical certificates, e.g. for private health insurance purposes.
Miscellaneous
We also hold contracts with Dumfries & Galloway Health Board for the following "enhanced services":
- An annual flu immunisation programme to protect the elderly and at risk
- Regular monitoring, by blood and urine tests for patients on a range of drugs for arthritis and bowel problems
- Annual comprehensive review for patients with heart disease
- Annual comprehensive review for patients with diabetes
- Annual comprehensive review for patients with asthma and COPD
